Mr. Taylor, as it seems from the article, does not know Muslims or stays with them for the sufficient time to understand them: there are not governing hierarchy in Islam, and Muslims are the most internally controversial individuals amongst all religious persons.
Besides the matter stated above, all Muslims could not be integrated in the Western societies, - geographically, and less possible, politically. If any socio-cultural integrating possibility will materialized, that's will go throughout the most bloodiest events.
Idealism - is always the weakest point of all philosophers, including the imaginatively drived materialists, like Karl Marx. Knowing very little of the factual human beings, they make the make the unrealizable propositions. Human being is still not fully understood creature anyway: if so, why make the predicitons or propositions regarding human beings?
As for the Islam in general, - there is the Book, the Koran, which attributed to the God's Will: if so, who would dare in the Islamically governed society to oppose it, in relation to gays, if the death-penalty would be the punishment? Islamic societies refused to recognize the human rights for gays, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is essentially unapplicable to gays in any Islam-governed country. Question is: who will stand for the rights of homosexually oriented human males, boys and men, in the Muslims-governed countries? Almost nobody, with some Western's exception, like the U.S. and U.K., such as the killing two teenagers for the homosexually related conducts in Iran? The question are not theoretical at all, - there will be more murders of gays in the future inside the Muslims-governed countires, and nobody really knows how to prevent these killings, while even the simple man who was converted into Christianty 16 years ago is demanded by Muslims to be killed for his change of the religion, regardless his rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and related to it international Conventions... There even more difficult conditions created by the wars in Afganistan and in Iraq, and Western governments do not know how to prevent the continuing murders of own soldiers, along with any Iraqi or Afgani, who happens to be near particular points, disliked by extremistically minded and weapons-equiped Muslims...
There only one solution of these problems, as the surgical ones, - the miltary, - and which is very difficult one, not only for the US President, but for all soldiers who are send in the Muslims-contries. However, if the US military refused to have the openly gay soldiers, how there could be expectation for the military protection of gay minorities in the Islamic countries? Consequently, the external problems are overcomlicated by internal problems...
Gays who are concerned with own problems in own countries, are not less egocentristic then the nationalists or orthodoxants (the orthodoxant is my designation for any person whose mind are under strict religious orthodoxal indoctrination, and there are not two-three, but over NINE such religious indoctrinations).
Gays does not have the Doctrine, but they have the Sceince, which standing on their side. The fact is that Science always will turn down Religion, but gradually.

My conclusion is that gays need more education in all aspects of Science, as well as the Military Arts, in order to stand against any oppression or aggression, and Muslims are not only people whom they will face in the future fights for the right to co-exist, as long as the masses of humanity will not comprehend the principles of the Human Rights. There not one boat for the Muslims and Gays, not currently, not in the future...
